PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Located beneath the Westway flyover in North Kensington, Maxilla Gardens is a powerful transformation of a site shaped by history. In the 1960s, the construction of the A40 displaced over 1,000 residents, cutting streets in half and forever altering the neighborhood. The area now serves as a vibrant tribute to the community’s resilience.

This ambitious project, Maxilla Gardens, led by community leaders Tayshan Hayden-Smith and Danny Clarke, aimed to reconnect people with nature and each other in a space designed for reflection and growth. Gardens and hubs, crafted from scaffolding and other reused materials, pay homage to the playgrounds that once stood here. CORE DATUM EDGE was integral to shaping the pathways that guide visitors through this revived space, symbolising a connection to the area’s past and its bright future.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

• Efficiency:  Installation had to be fast and straightforward, minimizing disruption to the site.

• Sustainability: A durable, eco-friendly solution was essential for the community-focused project.

• Adaptability:  The product needed to accommodate the site’s sweeping curves and varying levels seamlessly.

THE SOLUTION:

The installation of just under 600 meters of CORE DATUM EDGE was completed swiftly thanks to its modular, bolt-together design. The Datum Lock system allowed for precise leveling and easy adjustments, critical for the intricate curves and angles of the pathways beneath the flyover.

Compared to traditional concrete edging, the CORE DATUM EDGE system offered significant advantages…

Speed of Installation: The lightweight, flexible design eliminated the need for heavy machinery and extensive groundwork, cutting installation time drastically.

Cost Savings: Concrete edging requires longer preparation and curing periods, leading to higher labor and material costs. The efficiency of CORE DATUM EDGE reduced these expenses significantly.

Environmental Benefits: CORE DATUM EDGE further supported the project’s sustainability goals:

Low Carbon Footprint: Corten steel production is far less carbon-intensive than concrete, which is one of the largest contributors to global CO2 emissions.

Recyclability: Unlike concrete, which often ends up in landfills, Corten steel is fully recyclable, reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.

Longevity: The natural weathering properties of Corten steel ensure it withstands the elements, reducing the need for maintenance or replacement over time.
